Walmart Reacts to Community Appeal Against Permits

Yesterday, March 29, a coalition of community organizations, including the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy, Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance and Chinatown small businesses and residents, filed an appeal with the city challenging the approval process for the building and operating permits for the planned Walmart store in L.A.’s Chinatown.
Walmart responded with a statement (read below) decrying “just how far a handful of special interests will go” — referring, apparently, to the extreme act of Los Angeles residents filing papers at City Hall to appeal an arguably rapid permitting process that affects local development. Take it away, Walmart:
This action shows how far a handful of special interests will go to block jobs, economic development and new shopping opportunities from coming to the downtown and Chinatown communities. The site has always been zoned for a grocery store, has been empty for most of the last two decades and our plans clearly comply with all City requirements. Residents shouldn’t have to wait any longer for new, fresh food options and we have every confidence that our plans will continue to move forward.
